Sara's Top Ten (Implicit) Final Fantasy Romances (6/26/10)

Planned before I really started looking into what I would refer to as fan fiction in my last review, I wanted to do a list of characters that would have implicit romantic attachments in a Final Fantasy game.  This means that there is something in the game that signifies that they were interested in one another as a couple, or that they were a couple in the game.

Some will only be small sequences that shows the longing of the characters.  Others will be based on the fact that they're was a game about their romance.  Some could've only been optional.  Regardless, each of these should be apparent in the games from which they're from.

Note: Yes, I'm using fan art in most cases of this, as save for a few specific ones, as it's just prettier in most cases.

10  Locke/Celes

Locke and Celes were barely shown, but the impact of their relationship upon the two of them was readily apparent.  The most major case of this comes when Locke throws himself over the edge of a cliff to save her when she's fallen at the end of the game, however, other smaller elements alluded to what the future held for these characters.

9  Cloud/Tifa

The relationship that has yet to happen.  Sure, we all know where it was going at the end of Advent Children, but fuck...mopey Cloud, all sad about Aerith can look past that at the girl who really should be knocking his socks off...just damn!

The Game Overthinker, aka Movie Bob, said it best:

"What the fuck, right?  This is the perfect woman for a prototypical Squaresoft sad sack like the young Mr. Strife, no?"

From The Game Overthinker, Volume 9.

8  Leon/Rinoa

What can I say?  The entire game is based around their getting together for the most part...oh, and stopping Ultimecia's plot, but that's secondary...right?  And Eyes on Me, while really sappy, is a good enough Love Theme (though definitely not the best) to make the list.

Then again, a lot of my info on this romantic relationship is based on an odd source (seriously, click it and find out).

7  Ignus/Sara

I spoke about these two a bit in my last review, but these characters have a rather innocent love, that's really only shines through at the end when she calls him an idiot, and tells him, quite succinctly, that she wants to be with him, and that he should've picked up on it by now.

6  Edge/Rydia

Ah, the ninja and the summoner.  One of my favorite couples in Final Fantasy and they were never really a couple, at least, not in the actual games.  Yes, it's hinted at, a LOT.  Most of the hints come through the constant flirting from the young prince, but it really wasn't until his appearance in the Village of Myst in The After Years that any real evidence was given.

5  Vaan/Penolo

Finding an image of these two's kiss is so fucking hard!  This was the closest thing I could find, and it was someone's LiveJournal pic...sheesh.  Anyways, back on topic.  These two are just cute.  They start out best friends brought together on the streets of Dalmasca, but grow closer.  It's not really shown until their very brief kiss in Revenant Wings how close they are, but as they're still partner Sky Pirates in Tactics A2, we can at least assume they're still close.

4  Wakka/Lulu

They're one of they only two couples to have been 'married' and had a kid in the FF series, and that's something really kind of special.  I know they're mostly together because of Lulu's relationship with Chappu that ended in his death, but the fact that they come together in that is really kind of beautiful.

3  Tidus/Yuna

Still in FFX, Yuna and Tidus' relationship was really well done, and the fact that could even build an entire second game on it was kind of cool.  Hell, FFX had me in tears in this scene and the ending just made it all the more heartbreaking.

Then there's the sequel.  Often hated for being so 'girly' or 'cheesecakey' depending on critic, the story is actually quite good when you break it down into just the relationship of these two characters.  All she wants is her love back, and she literally crosses into the ether to pull him back.

2  Balthier/Ashe

Ok...this might have more to do with the implications that they are Han Solo and Leia Organa, but damn, this undercurrent theme is really well done, not overpowering the story like romance had done in previous FF titles, and that works for me.  Only a few little things really show what's going on for these two, but once it becomes more obvious late in the story, it's really kind of nice.  Too bad there was no real follow up to the end of the relationship in Revenant, but the Ivalice Alliance isn't finished...yet.

1  Cecil/Rosa

What can I say, FFIV is my favorite game.  Has been my favorite since I played it, will probably be for a while yet.  It's just epic.  At first glance, the Cecil/Rosa relationship plays out very much like the Damsel in Distress...twice, but upon further notice, they're really quite a wonderful pair, with her being there for him when he needs her, not only emotionally or able to heal, but can pick up a bow and join in the fighting.  This was the first implicit romance plotline as well in an FF game.  They are also the other only couple to actually marry and have a child, Ceodore, who joins in the fight to save the world from the Creator.  That even more so gave their relationship depth that other relationships didn't have in the FF series.

So that's my list.  Did I miss one (besides Cloud/Aerith, which will never be on this list)?  Was one on here better than another?  Let me know.
