Final Fantasy have given its heroes some massive power to work with in the past, from the glorious sword Excalibur, to the Red Mage's Doublecast. From the White Mage's Holy, to the Black Mage's Ultima. However, it is the summoner's ability that is vastly different that all others.
Call them Espers, Eidolons, Monsters, whatever, at the end of the day, they're the summons, high powerful creatures and people from mythologies and religions who use their vast stores of power to fight alongside the heroes. In many of their appearances, they've also been parts McGuffin and parts Character along with their powerful magical status.
So without any further ado, let's jump into the Top Ten Summons of the Final Fantasy series.
10. Famfrit

Famfrit is one of the newer ones from the Ivalice Alliance, which also used the names for previous title's summons as Airship Titles. As such, he's much newer than the rest of the characters on this list, making his first appearance in Tactics Advance as the first Totema you collect. Once you have though, you realize how beast using them are. He's able to decimate the entire battlefield in a rain of white energy. Too bad his FFXII appearance wasn't as inspiring though.
9. Anima

You're probably saying, "Now, wait just a second here. This is an evil characters truly wicked summon from hell." Well, you're right. The fact that it's also that evil character's mother who gets despised at what he's done and wants to save her son by no longer being his summon but being yours makes Anima a hero. Yeah, I was kinda shocked, too.
8. Odin

The One Eyed King was a magnificent creature to behold the first time I collected him. Riding on what appears to be the other summon Ixion, the Norse God of Lightning first really surprised me when he revealed himself to be the monstrous ghost form of the King of Baron (FFIV). That was pretty freakin' sweet that your passed on father figure got to fight alongside you like this.
7. Ifrit

Starting out as Djinn to most of us, this guy isn't a genie I'd ask a wish from. What looks like a mix between a werewolf and the devil, Ifrit has always been the go to fire summon. The fact that I think of him as a big fluffy puppy might account for his placement on the list though.
6. Alexander

I know I haven't played IX, but the version of Alexander with the gigantic, pearly white wings are just awesome to me. This creatures attack, Divine Justice, could be renamed Holyja and I'd be just as happy. I hear it's really awesome in IX though, and can't wait to check it out, but he's on hear purely for attack and look right now.
5. Gilgamesh/Yojimbo

Ok...this one goes out to Plumerou, who'd have a fit if Gil isn't on here. The reason they're both on here though is because essentially, they are their respective games equals. They both are warriors of a Japanese style who uses one of four random attacks, though, where Gilgamesh pulls Excalipoor, Yojimbo sics Daigoro (his dog) on your enemies. All in all, both awesome characters.
4. Valefor

Valefor was always my favorite summon to call in FFX. I don't know why...maybe it's because he didn't do a specific elemental damage and was the most modifiable, but he was easily my favorite, and as Yuna's first summon, kind of her's too, which makes you feel for it a bit more. The wedding scene from the same game also kind of makes a mark as Valefor plays a large part in that.
3. Ultima

Ultima is just awesome, she's part angel, part massive canon. Sure, in Tactics Advance and FFXII, she really wasn't that strong, but in her first appearance, and any time you have to fight her, you need to be afraid of how strong this character really is. The fact that her moniker is the High Seraph, doesn't hurt my taste in her.
2. Bahamut

The younger king of Dragons in the FF series (Tiamat was first as one of the four fiends), is made of win. He can make your characters stronger by waving a Rat's Tail at them, he can use an attack called Holy Flare, and he's the strongest (offensively) of the summons period. In IX, it is him and Alexander duking it out, and I really want to play that game just to see it.
1. Shiva

Shiva is a personal favorite. She's an Ice Queen, she knows martial arts, and when she kills you, you turn into diamonds. If I could have any summon constantly at my disposal, Shiva would be it, and I even said so back in the Birthday Series of Season 1 in my Most Wanted Items Top Ten List.
So let me know. What summon did I miss? Is IX's battle really as epic as I've heard? Should Shiva be beaten by someone else (Plume...I know what you're going to say...so just say it and be done)? Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
