Sara's Top Ten Games with Final Fantasy in the Title (6/19/10)

And so begins season two.  Season two for both My Favorite Games and Sara's Top Ten will both start with a 16 part cross over series, with six top tens based on the FF series coupled with the reviews of the games covered in this list as part of My Favorite Games.

As I already did the Kingdom Hearts series, it won't make it on this FF top ten list (as it won't be a part of the series).  However, later top tens in this series will include it, as it does have a collosal amount of FF elements, and as I love stories, and with KH being one of the better developed amongst the FF games, it will definitely find its place on here.

So, before I get started though, I know this list is way overdone, and a lot of people put certain games almost universally as the 1 and 2 spot.  One of those doesn't appear on mine, and the other, very close to the end.  So...yeah.  Here's my top ten favorite FF games.

Note:  As I'm about to do an overview, this list will not talk about the games themselves in depth, but why I like them.

10.  Final Fantasy II

Dawn of Souls was a wonderful game pak for someone like me who wanted to get into the FF game but wasn't sure where to start.  II itself was a mediocre game though, not really helped by a system that allowed you to one shot most bosses.

However, it's Leonheart (or Leon), one of the major antagonists of the game, who I find the most interesting.  He's more a villain than a hero, and only rejoins your team so that he can kill the emperor and take his throne, but that's kind of awesome in it's own right.

9.  Final Fantasy III

Ah, FFIII...for starters, this game might not be on the list if it hadn't really introduced my absolute favorite system in the entire FF series.  It's an ok story, a little dry, but decent overall.  However, the job system my favorite thing about an FF game, and the reason I liked borrowing III and a DS for a roadtrip.

8. Final Fantasy VI

Hey, I told you only one of the two made the list, and this is the one I liked better.  For me, FFVI is all about the music.  It's there that this game truly shined, as I never really saw an improvement from IV and V's battle system save the removal of jobs from V and more battle options added.  I hated the Esper system, and the story bores me.

7.  Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced

Ok, now were getting into the real reasons I'm an FF fangirl.  Tactics Advance is unique amongst all the other FF games, as it's the first one I played.  If you've read a few of my other reviews, you'll notice one game I mention a lot, Ogre Battle/Ogre Saga.  Now, for those of you unaware, Ogre Saga was made by the same man who designed the first FF Tactics title, Yasumi Matsuno.  It is actually the reason Squaresoft hired him, and eventually bought Quest, the company in charge of Ogre Saga.  I love these games, and if Squenix really wanted to make me happy, this is the series they'd return to, not Chrono (though it's awesome too).

Tactics Advance was the first I tried after learning this, and I adored it.  I lost rougly twenty hours with it, and I still do when I return to it.

6.  Final Fantasy X-2

Bring on the flamers.  I know it's coming...but this game is beautiful.  The graphics went up from its predecessor, and the music was really well done (save for the opener, though 1000 Words really makes up for that).  The Characters are really well developed, and then, my favorite system, Jobs, makes an interesting leap from FFV.

FFX-2 was actually on my most hated games in the past, as an ex had given it to me, and I hated it for that reason, however, moving past that, this is a decent game, as long as you ignore the Pop Star Class.

5.  Final Fantasy V

Job Class System at its best.  Not a bad story either, but the reason this is on here is for two reason.  First, this is the saddest FF game out there.  You have so many friends and family die on screen it's insane.  Galuf's sacrifice really drives this home, but it's just amazing the kill count in this game.

The second reason is the song Dear Friends.  If you haven't heard it, you will if you follow this series in the coming days.  It's an epic piece that really shows how much has been lost, and how much there is to be gained, and it's easily one of my favorite pieces through out the entire series.

4.  Final Fantasy XII

I think my sister said it best when I was watching Fall of the Bahamut in preparation for this series.  "Is that Star Wars you're watching?"  It's the best video game version of Star Wars out there, and it's an FF game...that's pretty cool.  The gameplay is boring, especially once you have the gambits in place, all you have to do is walk your characters around from point a to point b.  It gets tedious, but the story is really good...then again...it's the original Star Wars Trilogy...so, how could it not be?

3.  Final Fantasy

Ah, the original in the series.  Of course, I played it again on the Dan of Souls game pak, but it was worth it.  The first main series game I played, and where my love for red mages stems from.  The fact that this started the epic series also lends itself some love from me.

2.  Final Fantasy X

Some people don't like this game.  I've never been sure as to why, save for one thing.  Tidus.  He's an annoying little douche, but if you can get past him, it's actually a pretty decent game.  Great battle system, pretty decent story, and Auron's just kick ass.  I keep expecting an X-3, but I tend to doubt it at this point...but maybe one day.

1.  Final Fantasy IV

Before I get started, I've only looked at one my favorite games 3D iterations sadly.  I wish it was more, but as it is, I've only gotten a little look at it.  It's fucking awesome.  Going back to the version I played on the Game Boy Advance though...it's awesome there too.  This is my absolute favorite JRPG for many reasons, but you're going to have to wait for the last of the FF My Favorite Games to hear why.

So, I think that covers it.  That's my list of top ten games with FF in the title (KH would probably rank in second or third if it was on the list).  These ten games will make up the My Favorite Games portion of this series, with five more top tens coming in after every two, so if you like what you've seen, be sure to check back.

p.s.  THIS IS MY LIST, FOLKS.  Please don't flame saying things like VII is the best FF game.  It's just my favorites, and it's part of my series.  VII can't be on here because I haven't played it.
