My Favorite Games, Vol. 1.13 - Halo Special, Part V (12/8/09)

The entire Halo series has had a profound effect on gaming.  From creating the current FPS craze the industry seems to be spiraling in, to the increase in Machinima, to a genuine increase in game's representation in other media.  So far, it's been a mixed bag, but only time can tell what it will bring.

Until then, we can only look what's been released thus far.  Amongst these are the machinma series, Red vs. Blue, the Legends series, and Xbox focus on FPS multiplayer with Live.

Red vs. Blue

Oh, how I love you Red vs. Blue.  Your Machinima humor is genuinely hillarious, and mocks everything about the Halo games while actually staying within most of the canon (save for all the characters wearing Mjolnir armor, but that doesn't bother me).

Speaking of canon, this series has actually delved into the other materials, especially in the later series, especially the Reconstruction series.  They incorporate one of the key points of Cortana's development as part of the AI situation, which makes perfect sense in the canon.  It's awesome.  Cortana even goes through the same thing Church does with all the duplications in the First Strike novel (which adds to the Forerunners are humans subject, which I've decided to withhold for a seperate blog).

If you haven't seen it, you owe it to yourself to watch at least the first season of Blood Gulch Chronicles.  If you're not hooked by then, you're insane, and not in a good way.  Here, I'll even get you started:

They've gotten loads better since then, and are still producing new material.  They're currently in a hiatus between seasons (Season Nine should be starting soon).  When Season Nine is announced, I'll let everyone know as soon as I do.

Halo Legends
I don't know about you, but Halo Legends has been spectacular to me.  Blending elements from Anime and Halo actually works, strangely enough, and it's a good thing.  So far there have only been three episodes about it, but it's still rather nice.

If you haven't seen it, you should watch it.  The Package even reveals a lot of the actual Spartans, Solomon, Kelly (another member of Blue Squad, who plays a part in the books), Arthur, and Frederic (another member of Blue Squad).  My only problem is that the Spartans aren't all wearing Mjolnir armor.

Kelly and Fred in The Package

I've already done a full review of The Duel, which I thought was incredible, and The Babysitter was a good look at the Spartan-Marine interaction, that the game never really showed in full.  You can watch the latter here.

If anymore of them become available online legally, I will post them.

Xbox Live

As I've said before, I hate Xbox Live...I hate it with a fiery passion.  However, it's a good thing for online gaming.  I love being able to play with others at any time, be it two in the morning, or 6:30 in the evening.  It's nice.  And Halo can be said to have directly attributed to it.

Halo:  Combat Evolved had become a phenomenon for it's multiplayer experience, and when it came to the online component with it's sequel, it just got even better.  While this also increased the dreaded FPS market, the simple fact that it developed the multiplayer experience into what it is now is just phenomenal.

Love it or hate it, the fact that Halo has had such an impact on the gaming market that this is only a small fraction of the things it's caused, you have to respect the game.  If you don't like what it has done, tell me so, and if you liked any other things these games have wrought, please let me know.

Until next time...
-Sara
