My Favorite Games, Vol. 1.16 - Metroid: Zero Mission (12/15/09)

Youth sometimes has it's consequences.  One of those for me was missing out on Metroid.  Now let that sink in for a second.  I am a girl gamer who didn't play any Metroid game until she was fifteen.

That's when I decided to change things.  I was in the midst of rebuilding a lot of my collection as I'd had a few regular paying jobs here and there and I was tired of not having the collection I once had.  The first three systems I purchased were the ones of that generation, the Xbox, the GameCube, and the Gameboy Advance (the PS2 was still a few years from joining my collection at all).

Whilst doing so...I came across Metroid Prime.  I knew it was good...it had a sequel, so it had to have been somewhat popular, so I bought it.  When I got home, I put it in and I liked it a lot.  However, Prime is no where near one of my favorites.  It's good...but something just great enough to make it in to my favorites

However, I had liked it, so I decided to look for other games in the series.  Some research into the other titles revealed that the original game had recently gotten an updated version in the form of Zero Mission, and some sites had toted it as the best Metroid game other than Super Metroid.  It would be the next on my list.

Now this, this was awesome.  Where Prime had shortcomings, Zero Mission was outstanding.  Now, as you might've figured out, I don't believe 2D is inherently better, but for Metroid, it simply is.  It's why I'm so excited about Other M.

Anyways...this game has no story.  Point in fact...very few of the games have a coherent story.  They're much like the Halo games in that fashion (don't worry, the comparisons to Halo stop there).  You only see the mission in this game...none of the before, and almost none of the after.  However, the added epilogue does give quite a bit of story.  In it, Samus' past is revealed, and it's very interesting.  I only hope that if the Zelda Manga does well here in the states (more on that later) that they bring the Metroid one, as I very much would like to read it.

If you haven't played Metroid, it's nearly impossible to explain how the game plays.  It's a 2D action platformer, very similar to the newer Castlevania's (hence their being called Metroid-vania's), but rather than have melee weapons, you have an arm cannon.  If you haven't played one though, you owe it to yourself to check one out immediately.

Visually, it's not the prettiest game, but for a GBA title, I can think of only a few games better that it, and most of those have a SquareEnix label attached.  If you like how other games for the handheld look, like Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, you'll probably like this.

Music is some of the best in the series in my opinion.  Most of it is remixes of the original game, but that's not a bad thing.  Have a listen.

So let me know what you think.  Do you like the original better?  Do you disagree, believing that there's a complete story in game?  Do you like Zero Mission?  Let me know.

Final note:  Yes I know Metroid is included on Prime, but I haven't played nor do I own Metroid Fusion, so...I wasn't able to play it that way.
