Tonight's blog was going to be volume three of "My Favorite Games", however, due to life stuff, I'm instead giving out my 10 most hated games. They can be hated for a number of reasons, including those outside of the game. This means, they may be good and I may like the way they play, but something about them bothers me. So here goes, my top ten most hated games.
#10 The Black Cauldron (Tandy/PC)
This first game is on the list because it's one of the few games to ever legitimately scare me. I like to be in control of my surroundings, my emotions, everything about myself...this game scared the hell out of me. Literally. You're on a pretty little farm. Things are happy. You take a pig inside the house. A vision from hell takes over, ominous music, and the screen flashes red. It's disturbing...especially when you're six.
#9 Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
This game is a chore. Seriously...doing well in this game takes so much work, it's not even worth it. And this is from my favorite video game series. I like Zelda. I like Platformers. I like RPG's. Trying to combine all three doesn't work.
#8 Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage (N64)
As with Zelda II, this game was a chore to play, but one I was devoted to beating as it was one of the few RPG's I had at the time. The massive story hinted at doesn't make much sense, and in the end is just annoying. The characters have no personality, and the game looks and plays horribly. Avoid at all costs.
#7 Gauntlet Dark Legacy (Xbox)
This game was a favorite of my father's. As such, he commanded the game like he does everything else. It was conducive to enjoying the game, and as such, I associate this game, and other dungeon crawlers of a Gauntlet style, i.e. Marvel Ultimate Alliance, with my mood towards his actions while playing it.
#6 Final Fantasy X-2
While most hated the game because of it's story and gameplay, I actually liked those parts. What I hate about it is that it was given to me as a present by an ex that cheated on me. Kind of ruins games for you when things like that happen.
#5 Barney's Hide & Seek Game
This was my sister's first game...and while it was good at what it did, Barney's horrific voice will stay with you FOREVER!
#4 Halo 3
This game and I have a love/hate relationship. I love the gameplay, the campaign, the forge, the multiplayer settings, the maps, the theatre. I hate the online components though. To the price gouging DLC to the douches on Xbox Live, this game and my experiences with it are the embodiment of all things wrong with online gaming.
#3 World of Warcraft
Except for this. Ok, again there's a love-hate relationship here. W.o.W. and I get along as long as I can quest and do my own thing, but when I have to start relying on people for things that I should be able to find in game myself or make myself, that's when it gets annoying. I don't want to have to go through a dungeon with strangers I've never played with. That's how you end up dead. I want to rely on my own wits, my own internet connection, and my own ability to play the game, thank you very much. Also, where the hell is a Red Mage class?!? Paladin's are all well and good, but not if you also like to have the occasional fire power spell, too.
#2 Azurik: Rise of Perathia
This game sucks. Nothing more to it. It brought up my hopes for a truly great launch title, something that might be able to rival some of the great action adventure RPG's out there. Instead...we got this truly worthless game. It is because of this game that I blame the 360's FPS status on. Of the four in house launch titles for the 360, this was the one that could have stopped the rampancy of Halo...if only it hadn't sucked. Still, I like Halo...so...
#1 Dark Angel (Xbox)
I know I said the last gamed sucked...so I need to think of something new for this game. This game is worse than Superman 64. No, I'm serious. I could play Superman 64, and actually enjoyed it, which puts me in a major minority. This game was just bad. There is no redeeming quality to it whatsoever, save that it's based on a decent action series. Even with that though, it disregards it's source material save for characters, setting, and specific names, none of which really make sense with the theme of the game. It's obvious that it was built as a Stealth-Action game like Metal Gear Solid...however, it just didn't work when it threw you up against extremely over powered bosses every five minutes. This is the only game I've not finished and have owned (I still own it, and haven't beaten it, that's how bad it is). If you have...your pain threshold is higher than mine, and good for you.
So let me know what your most hated game is, why, and what you think of the list. Volume three of My Favorite Games will probably be up tomorrow. It will be about Age of Mythologies, a mythological (duh!) RTS by Ensemble Studios, or Halo Wars and Age of Empires fame. Don't miss it.
